What are the possible causes and solutions for a sudden drop in laptop performance while gaming?

 
I have a laptop that used to run fortnite smoothly at 100-140fps, but recently it started to lag and only reach 30fps. The fans also became very loud and the laptop felt hot. I suspect that there might be dust accumulation inside the laptop, so I ordered some compressed air to clean it. However, I am not sure if that is the only issue or if there are other factors affecting the performance. How can I diagnose and fix this problem?
